Before we begin...

What is a neuropsychologist?

A neuropsychologist is a sub-specialist within the field of clinical psychology who studies the intersection between psychology, neuroscience, and medicine. Clinical neuropsychologists apply their expertise in the brain-behavior relationship to serve patients with cognitive impairment. Their roles include diagnosing, educating, and treating patients with various neurological and psychiatric conditions.

Who should see a neuropsychologist?

Any individual with cognitive decline or impairment is a suitable patient for a neuropsychologist. For example, someone exhibiting forgetfulness, poor attention, difficulties with problem-solving, and a general decline in productivity would benefit from consulting a neuropsychologist. Additionally, patients with sudden emotional or behavioral changes can also benefit from a consultation.

What neuropsychological services does Dr. Mo provide?

Dr. Mo offers comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations and behavioral interventions for a range of concerns. See below!

Neuropsychological Assessment

A neuropsychological assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of a patient's brain functioning (cognitive, behavioral, and emotional functioning), providing a holistic investigation of their clinical concerns.

What is the purpose of a neuropsychological assessment?

  1. Diagnosis: To find out the cause of cognitive impairment

  2. Psychoeducation: Help patients and family understand the diagnosis and what to expect in terms of recovery trajectory (prognosis)

  3. Treatment planning: Provide tailored recommendations and referrals to facilitate recovery and improve quality of life

Evidence-Based Interventions

Evidence-based interventions are types of treatments that are scientifically proven to be effective in reducing clinical symptoms. I offer the following interventions in my practice:

  1. Cognitive rehabilitation: To facilitate recovery for patients with cognitive impairment (e.g., stroke, brain injury, mild cognitive impairment, etc.). If recovery is not possible, the goal will be to provide compensatory strategies to patients and families.

  2. Psychotherapy: I offer cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for adults and older adults with limited mental health conditions (depression, anxiety, trauma-related disorders, general stress). I also infuse mindfulness-based techniques into my practice.

  3. Behavioral intervention for health-related concerns: I offer CBT and mindfulness-based interventions as an adjunct treatment for chronic pain and insomnia.

Consultation

Where do I begin? Who do I consult? What type of services do I need?

Seeking help for cognitive or brain-related concerns may feel daunting, but I am here to help! We can start with a 30-minute consultation to determine the best steps to take for you or your loved one.

During our consultation, I will help you determine whether neuropsychological services would be beneficial to you.

  • If we decide that you will benefit from a neuropsychological service, I will help you:

    • Prepare for a neuropsychological assessment, such as getting a neurological examination and scheduling a brain MRI, or

    • Determine the right intervention for your specific concern

  • If we determine that neuropsychological services are not the best fit, I will refer you to the most suitable provider to ensure you receive the best care.
